What is the proper rate for GPS position updates?

Deals with the web service platform called Drive&Arrive http://driveandarrive.ptvgroup.com/en/ that enables you and your stakeholders to stay up2date with the current transport's estimated time of arrival (ETA)

What is the proper rate for GPS position updates?

Post by Bernd Welter »

Hi there,

a customer of mine wants a recommendation for the GPS position update frequency.

As far as I know it doesn't make sense to perform those updates every few seconds.

Is there any generic recommendation for the update interval?

Does it make a difference whether we check
  • a long distance tour between cities
  • a last mile tour with few hundred meters between hundred stops
?

Best regards,
Bernd

We would recommend to send it every minute (driver app also sends it every minute)
Beneath more frequent updates of ETA This assures better automatic recognition of drive&rest periods taken by the driver.

Up to 3 minutes is also quite good

Important is, that you start delivering GPS positions, when the tour starts, you can get effects in the ETA if the driver turns on his device later, as we assume, that is the point, where he starts driving, and use it in the drive&rest periods calculations
